Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates addresses the audience in the Pentagon auditorium assembled to see the unveiling of photographic portraits of the last nine veterans of World War I on March 6, 2008. On hand to see his portrait uncovered was Frank Woodruff Buckles, one of two surviving WWI vets. Buckles served as an Army ambulance driver in WWI after enlisting at age 15. The portraits, by photographer David DeJonge, will be placed on permanent display in the Pentagon.
