The Naval research submarine NR-1 docks alongside the submarine support ship MV Carolyn Chouest at Naval Station Norfolk, Va., on Oct. 24, 2006. NR-1 is the Navy's smallest and only research submarine. The vessel performs underwater search and recovery, oceanographic research missions, installation and maintenance of underwater equipment to a depth of almost a half mile.
