Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Alvarez uses a sextant to plot the navigational position of the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) at sea on Sept. 3, 2000. Alvarez, from Los Angeles, Calif., is a Navy quartermaster onboard the aircraft carrier. The Lincoln, its embarked Carrier Air Wing 14 and the Lincoln Battle Group are en route to the Persian Gulf on a routine six-month deployment.
