A U.S. Navy F/A-18C Hornet releases a Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM) in the first fleet squadron drop of the newly developed weapon during training at the Okinawa, Japan Range Area on Aug. 22, 1999. JDAM uses a global positioning system aided inertial navigation system to guide its 2,000 or 1,000 pound warhead to the target with a high degree of accuracy. The Hornet, attached to Strike Fighter Squadron 195 of Naval Station Yokosuka, Japan, is operating from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63).
