Marine Barracks Minefield Maintenance personnel unload deactivated anti-tank and anti-personnel land mines for destruction at a demolition site on Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in this March 18, 1997, file photo. Anti-personnel and anti-tank land mines on the U.S. side of the fence separating Communist Cuba and the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay are being removed in accordance with the Presidential Order of May 16, 1996. Approximately 50,000 land mines were placed in the buffer zone between Communist Cuba and Guantanamo Bay beginning in 1961 as a result of the Cold War. The land mines are being replaced by motion and sound sensors to detect any incursion onto the base.
