Cargo is off-loaded from a U.S. Air Force C-141B Starlifter parked on a runway of ice at McMurdo Base, Antarctica, on Sept. 30, 1997. The aircraft is bringing in supplies and equipment in support of Operation Deep Freeze. Deep Freeze is joint military operation of the U.S. armed forces and the New Zealand Defence Forces, to provide logistic support for the U.S. National Science Foundation's Antarctic program. The Starlifter is deployed to Christchurch, New Zealand, from the 62nd Airlift Wing, McChord Air Force Base, Wash.
