Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. John M. Shalikashvili, U.S. Army, delivers his remarks during his farewell ceremony at Fort Myer, Va., on Sept. 30, 1997. Shalikashvili is retiring from the U.S. Army and his job as the nation's senior military officer and will be succeeded by Gen. Henry H. Shelton, U.S. Army. President Bill Clinton awarded Shalikashvili the Presidential Medal of Freedom earlier in the ceremony.
