Minister of Defense Joe Modise of South Africa (right), inspects the joint services honor guard assembled at the Pentagon, July 28, 1997, to formally welcome him on his first official visit to the U.S. Department of Defense. Accompanying the Minister are Secretary of Defense William Cohen (left), his host for the visit, and the Commander of Troops for the ceremony, Col. Greg Gardner, U.S. Army, commander, 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard). Following the ceremony, the two defense leaders met to discuss a range of security issues of mutual interest to both nations.
