A U.S. Navy sailor talks to People's Republic of China Navy sailors at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on March 9, 1997. Three People's Republic of China ships are visiting Hawaii for the first part of a scheduled goodwill visit between the U.S. and Chinese navies. The ships will continue on to San Diego, Calif., for a first-ever visit by People's Republic of China Navy ships to the mainland U.S. The U.S. and the People's Republic of China navies are the two largest fleets in the Asia-Pacific region. Interaction between the two navies increases mutual understanding and confidence. During the visits, Chinese sailors will have the opportunity to meet their U.S. Navy counterparts, tour U.S. ships, experience American culture in Hawaii and Southern California, and learn about the United States.
