The Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Scranton (SSN 756) surfaces in the North Arabian Sea while the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) cruises in the background on May 9, 1996. The George Washington and its battle group were operating in the Arabian Gulf where they conducted air patrols in support of Operation Southern Watch. Southern Watch is the U.S. and coalition enforcement of the no-fly-zone over Southern Iraq.
