The primary purpose of West Shore Lake Pontchartrain project is to provide flood risk reduction to the St. Charles, St. James and St. John the Baptist parishes. A factor in accomplishing this goal are drainage canals located on either side of the West Shore alignment. The flood side drainage canal is on the side of the levee that faces Lake Pontchartrain. It diverts excess water away from the levee back into the lake during non-flood times. Whereas the protected side drainage canal faces the landward side of the levee and is primarily designed to manage rainfall runoff and groundwater seepage. Each canal’s size and design are tailored to their function and exposure, balancing effective flood risk reduction and proper water management on both sides of the levee.
