This year’s Army 250th birthday celebration calls us to give recognition to Soldiers with rich family history within our armed forces.
Maj. Keith Black, a Judge Advocate for 1st Armored Division, Division Tactical Operations Center (DTAC) had a lifelong dream not just to serve his country but fulfill a commitment of military service just as his family members before him.
“I’ve worked in the civilian sector for over 25 years, nowhere is there a more diverse group of individuals serving with conviction and a common purpose,” said Black. “I’m proud of how our service pulls us together. I wish the rest of the country would feel and act like this.”
Maj. Black’s family military lineage dates to the Revolutionary War, with relatives who served honorably in the Civil War, Spanish-American War, WWII, Korean War, and all throughout the Vietnam era. Currently his daughter serves as military police service member for the Michigan National Guard.
Reflecting on his service and family legacy brought back the memory of his mother who wrote letters of support to Soldiers in Vietnam. “I think that says it all. When her brother went to serve in Vietnam, so did she, just in a different way.”
Dedication to service is not just from the service members but from the support of their families who also sacrifice of themselves in order for our service members to stay mission focused.
