In celebration of KATUSA Friendship Week, get to know PFC Choi, Ji Hun: a valued member of the Far East District, who exemplifies the strength of the U.S.-ROK alliance through his service, dedication, and international background.
Choi began his service with FED in April 2025 and currently supports critical engineering projects as part of the District’s ongoing mission. Before joining the military, Choi studied Applied Statistics at Yonsei University—an academic path he plans to resume after completing his military service.
Though born in South Korea, Choi’s formative years were spent abroad. From 2008 to 2022, he lived in India, completing his education in Chennai and Bengaluru while his parents pursued work opportunities there. This international upbringing gave him a global perspective and a natural ease with cross-cultural communication skills he brings to his daily work at FED.
“Unlike other enlisted ROK soldiers, we [KATUSAs] have the unique opportunity to engage with people from different countries and backgrounds,” Choi said. “It’s one of the most rewarding aspects of being a KATUSA.”
He initially felt nervous about adjusting to U.S. Army culture, but he quickly found his footing thanks to the warm welcome from his team. “Everyone at FED was kind from day one. They helped me settle in quickly,” he shared. “Now, I’m focused on doing my best to contribute.”
Outside of work, Choi enjoys watching and playing soccer with fellow KATUSAs and is a fan of the KBO League, Korea’s professional baseball organization. He also looks forward to completing his degree and pursuing a career overseas—ideally one that combines his technical background with global business insight.
As for KATUSA Friendship Week, Choi sees it as more than just fun events. “It’s a great way to strengthen teamwork and get to know the many support systems available on base,” he said.
His advice to future KATUSA candidates? “Don’t miss this opportunity. You’ll grow so much by learning to communicate and work with people from all over the world. Even if your English isn’t perfect—just try. That effort makes all the difference.”
From his diverse background to his positive attitude, Choi represents the best of what the KATUSA program stands for: friendship, mutual respect, and the power of international partnership.
