As we celebrate KATUSA Friendship Week, we’re proud to share the story of PFC Lee Man Hi, a new KATUSA soldier serving at the Far East District. Born and raised in Brazil for 19 years, Lee, whose Brazilian name is Nicolas, joined FED just a month ago to begin his military journey with the U.S. Army.
Lee is currently learning the ropes at FED’s Information Management Office (IMO), where he’s building skills in data handling and software applications. Prior to enlisting, he studied Computer Science for a year at UNIP in Brazil, where he developed a strong foundation in Python and Java.
Although he grew up speaking Portuguese and has limited Korean ability, Lee embraced the challenges of cross-cultural communication with optimism and determination. “I thought it would be easier since I could speak English,” he admitted, “but I quickly realized that knowing Korean would also be important. Still, everyone at FED has been so kind and supportive. I’m learning every day.”
His KATUSA journey hasn’t been easy. Lee remembers the rigorous training at the KATUSA Training Academy (KTA), especially the demanding language tests that required understanding both English and Korean military terms. “Every night I prayed,” he said. “By God’s grace and with support from my family and friends, I made it through and earned my place here.”
Outside of work, Lee enjoys playing soccer, video games, and hanging out with friends. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue living in Korea and eventually pursue further studies in cybersecurity or information technology.
Lee’s experience as a KATUSA is a reminder of how the program offers more than just military training. It fosters cultural exchange, lifelong friendships, and professional development. “Even if you don’t speak both languages well, give it a try,” he encourages. “It’s a completely different experience, and I’m loving it!”
As Lee settles into his role, he remains committed to helping his teammates and growing through every opportunity. “Thank you to everyone for the support,” he said. “If you ever need my help, just let me know. I’ll do my best with all I have.”
