COURTLAND, Ala. – Cmdr. Christopher Tilley (far right), commanding officer of Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) Program Management Office (PMO) Flight Systems, participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony at a Lockheed Martin Space facility on 1 April.
The ribbon cutting marked the realignment of unique Lockheed Martin activities supporting the Trident II strategic weapons system (SWS) program from the Naval Industrial Reserve Ordnance Plant (NIROP) Santa Cruz and LMS Santa Cruz Facility to Courtland. The NIROP Santa Cruz and LMS Santa Cruz facilities were damaged during California wildfires in 2020. Following thoughtful and thorough consideration, the decision was made to move work performed at those sites to Lockheed Martin’s site in Courtland, among other sites, consolidating similar functions and operations to realize efficiencies to support the Navy in delivering crucial technical expertise to the Warfighter.
SSP’s unique, long-term partnership with industry partners enables and supports decisions that contribute to a robust, modernized defense industrial ecosystem. DOD is developing innovative operational concepts and deploying cutting edge capabilities right now while investing in capabilities to maintain deterrence now and in the future. SSP is poised to deliver historic achievements to make U.S. sea-based deterrence force posture more mobile, distributed, resilient, and lethal.
“Because of the complexity, criticality, and trust involved in this mission we have always prioritized partnership as one of our values,” said Tilley.
Strategic Systems Programs is the Navy command that provides cradle-to-grave lifecycle support for the sea-based leg of the nation’s nuclear triad. This includes training, systems, equipment, facilities and personnel responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and effectiveness of the nation’s Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) Trident II D5LE Strategic Weapon System.
SSP is responsible for sustaining strategic weapon system (SWS) on the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) and supporting the integration of the D5LE weapon system on the new Columbia-class SSBNs. Looking to the future, SSP is integral to nuclear triad modernization with development of the D5LE2 SWS and creating the regional strike capabilities with the development of the nuclear sea launched cruise missile (SLCM-N) and the non-nuclear hypersonic conventional prompt strike system (CPS).
