The U.S. Navy’s launches Trident I C-4 from the submerged USS Mariano G. Vallejo (SSBN 658 - Gold) at 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 13, 1979, during Demonstration and Shakedown Operation 3 (DASO 3). The Trident I was a three-stage, solid-propellant, inertially guided, submarine-launched fleet ballistic missile. It boasted a greater range and payload than its predecessors.
