The U.S. Navy launches the fifth Poseidon C3 Production Evaluation Missile from the USS James Madison (SSBN 627) on Oct. 6, 1970. The C3 was a two-stage, solid-propellant missile capable being launched from a submerged submarine. The U.S. Navy maintained the Poseidon C3 missiles until the last one was offloaded in September 1992.
