Brig. Gen. William Grimsley (left) and Staff Sgt. Steven Holloway (right) help unveil a sign during an April 10 ceremony naming the fitness center here in honor of Sgt. 1st Class Paul R. Smith. At the time of Smith's death, Grimsley was the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division commander. Now the deputy commander of the 4th Infantry Division, Grimsley recommended Smith for the Medal of Honor. The award was approved in 2005. Holloway, a 3rd Infantry Division engineer, was a member of Smith's platoon and a personal friend. Holloway was engaged in fighting about 100 yards from Smith at the time Smith was mortally wounded by enemy fire.
