NMRLC celebrated Women's History Month with a presentation given by a representative of the Hampton Roads Naval Museum. Staff and crew were on hand to learn the rich history women have played in the nation and in the Navy.
The brief focused on historical greats such as Abigail Adams, who in 1776, as her husband participated in the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia, wrote her most famous letter that the Founding Fathers, “remember the ladies.” She added, “Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands. Remember all men would be tyrants if they could.”
It briefed on the Navy Nurse Corps, "The Sacred Twenty," of 1908. It highlighted the Navy women in World War I, and it described the first female Navy Chief Yeoman who came in as a chief in a newly created role.
The presentation identified the book, "Navy Blue and Other Colors: A Memoir of Adventure and Happiness," by Frances Wills Thorpe. Ens. Wills and Lt.j.g. Harriet Ida Pickens are the first female African American officers in the Navy in 1944.
In more recent times, the presentation told the story of Owens v. Brown, July 27, 1978. This case was instrumental in women gaining the right to serve in sea billets.
