NHHC Supports Tour Honoring “Sacred 20” at Arlington National Cemetery on Navy Birthday

ARLINGTON, Va. (Oct. 13, 2023) Andre Sobocinski, a historian at the Bureau of Naval Medicine, displays the only known photo of all members of the “Sacred 20” during a walking tour tracing the origins, development, and significance of the “Sacred 20” and the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps at Arlington National Cemetery on Oct. 13, 2023. The “Sacred 20” were the first group of women to be commissioned as nurses in the Navy and were the founding members of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps, as well as some of the first women to serve as uniformed officers in the Navy as a whole. The tour served to honor the “Sacred 20’s” legacy, as well as the 248th birthday of the Navy. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Jonathan Nelson)
