U.S. Air Force Col. David Wilson, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and 673d Air Base Wing commander, signs a fire prevention week proclamation in Fire Station 1 at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Oct. 5, 2023. As part of the proclamation, Wilson urged JBER members to check their kitchens for fire hazards to use safe cooking practices. According to the National Fire Protection Association, Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of Oct. 9 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on Oct. 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage.
