PORTSMOUTH, Va. (May 9, 2023) Capsules of Amoxicillin as seen at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth Allergy Clinic. A standard dose of the antibiotic is used as part of a direct-exposure test to determine if patients have an allergy to penicillin. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 10 percent of the U.S. population reports having a penicillin allergy. However, less than one percent of the whole population is truly allergic.
