As we close out #NationalPoliceWeek, we want to highlight the #Defenders that support the 89th Airlift Wing's mission. U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Alejandra Ortiz is a protective service's member assigned to the 816th Security Forces Presidential Support Squadron.
As a member of the protective service, SrA Ortiz provides safe escorts to all distinguished visitors, including the President of the United States, the Vice President of the United States, and cabin members.
Ortiz comes from a family of law enforcement personnel, and National Police Week is more personal to her.
"Police Week is significant to me because I grew up with a family of civilian police officers in the Sheriff's department," Ortiz explained. "I have honored police week at a young age and continued doing so. This year I have been a part of the Defenders Association as a board member, where we participated in a bowling tournament for Police Week, which was an honor to be a part of."
During her time serving, Ortiz has gained experience in both law enforcement and security.
"Coming from a law enforcement base, I learned how cruel law enforcement is. It deals with who gains access to the installation as well as maintaining the safety of the base," Ortiz said. "Security is different at every base; however, at Joint Base Andrews, we are a highly visible base, and the impressions we leave set a standard on how we represent the Air Force."
Throughout her career so far, Ortiz is not taking her experience in security forces for granted.
"I am thankful for all the guidance and knowledge I have gained from security forces members, and I continue to learn."
