One of many telephone poles snapped like a toothpick in the New York metro area by Hurricane Sandy, causing thousands of people to lose power in their homes and create hours- and miles-long waiting lines at the few gasoline stations with power. Dangerous conditions from poles suspended in the air and prevented from hitting homes only by utility wires strung between poles. High winds ripped roofing materials from homes, as evidenced by the roof visible in the background. (U.S. Navy photo by Joseph P. Cirone)
