This Fort Riley Friday we visit the Junction City-Fort Riley Trolley Station, 263 Sheridan Ave., located just south and east of Waters Hall. Built in 1901, it was used as baggage storage and a waiting area for riders of the inter-city trolley between Junction City and Fort Riley until 1907. At that time the tracks were moved closer to Waters Hall and the line extended along Huebner Road to Riley Place (near Riley's Community Center.) In 1914 the line was joined at Army City (near the post boundary with Ogden) by another line coming from Manhattan. The Junction City-Manhattan trolley was very successful during World War I. After the war, ridership declined rapidly and the line ceased operation in 1934.
Remnants of the trolley line road bed may be seen in this area near Waters Hall and along Huebner Road. The Trolley Station was restored in 1989 to appear as it did in the early 1900s.
