This Fort Riley Friday we look at one of several historic sites and monuments located around Cavalry Parade Field.

The "Old Trooper" monument, arguably the symbol of Fort Riley and nicknamed "Old Bill", stands along Sheridan Avenue on the northern edge of the parade
field. Dedicated in 1961, it was built using a sketch drawn in 1898 by renown Western artist Frederic Remington. The life-size horse and rider were constructed using chemically treated plastic. The final resting place of last cavalry horse registered to the U.S. Government, "Chief", lies at the foot of Old Bill. Chief (1932-1968) was buried in full gear standing up, ready to "ride again" at a moment's notice.
