Service members from the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment (MSD) in Sturgeon Bay, Wisc., perform safety inspection of the Adam E. Cornelius, an iron ore carrier. The Cornelius, like the Herbert C. Jackson pictured on the left, is called a Laker--a large cargo vessel which docks on the Great Lakes during winter. Each spring, the Coast Guard performs annual inspections just before the Lakers leave Sturgeon Bay shipyard. The MSD is also responsible for port safety and security and marine environmental protection.
