NASA education opportunities provide students an enhanced understanding of science, technology, engineering and mathematics STEM. Program Summary: The Student Launch Initiative SLI provides middle school, high school, and university teams the opportunity to design, build and launch rockets to a one-mile altitude. The rockets must carry a science payload, also designed and built by the student teams. Objective: The aim is to give students experience in NASA engineering, construction and science experiment procedures, while emphasizing safety at all stages of the project. NASA engineers mentor students and serve as reviewers to ensure rockets and payloads are built correctly. Time Frame: Teams must submit a proposal, participate in design and readiness reviews, launch their rockets and submit a post-launch readiness review over the course of this eight-month initiative. Application: SLI presents students opportunities to design, build and fly a series of more sophisticated launch vehicles and payloads, preparing them for careers in the aerospace industry.
