Navy Cmdr. (Dr.) Jack Tsao, associate professor of neurology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, in Bethesda, Md., encouraged Army Sgt. Nicholas Paupore, an outpatient at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, in Washington, D.C., to try mirror therapy to treat phantom pain in his amputated right leg. Tsao conducted the first clinical trials in mirror therapy and said he hopes to advance the study to bring relief to amputees from Iraq and Afghanistan.
