Joe Gills, a computer scientist at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, spent six months deployed in the Middle East as an on-the-ground engineer, supporting special operations forces. For his work, Gills received the Secretary of the Defense Medal for the Global War on Terrorism.
