Billy Croslow, the new command historian for the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence, stands for a photo at Fort Rucker, Alabama, March 9, 2022.

As historian, he builds the corporate knowledge of the organization. He collects information and helps ensure senior leaders' knowledge and experience is captured and imparted to junior leaders including through an oral history program for the Aviation branch. His job also has an education requirement, including onsite instruction at the U.S. Army Aviation Museum.

"All of the things that an officer who served for that long has done, whether it's mistakes they made early on in their career, successes, what's worked, what's failed, all that kind of stuff has to be hard won. One of the ways to short circuit that process is to use military history," he said.

Mr. Croslow comes to Fort Rucker from Kansas State University where he taught history classes while working on his doctorate degree. He has won awards for teaching at Kansas State's department and college of arts and sciences levels, and enjoys working with students. He is currently working on his dissertation.

His prior service includes as a field artillery officer and as an enlisted artilleryman. He retired from active duty at Fort Rucker in 2016 as a captain. He previously taught the integration/ deconfliction of joint fires, and to more junior leaders how to call for fires. His multi-component service included two deployments two Iraq.
