Cpl. Roberto Paiz, a food service specialist with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, from Petaluma, California, poses for a portrait at Fort Pickett, Virginia on Jan. 28, 2022. In his civilian career, Paiz works as a security guard and uses his procedural and observant skillset to ensure food standards are met to ensure quality food is provided for service members at Task Force Pickett. When asked about the traits he gained as a security guard, Paiz said, "The Marine Corps set the foundation for my leadership traits, my civilian job gave me the tools to build them up. Out here, I get to utilize those traits." The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible. This initiative provides Afghan personnel essential support at secure locations outside Afghanistan. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. David Intriago)
