This is a highly modified Fairchild 22 used for flight tests of retractable ailerons on a highly tapered wing. Normally a highwing aircraft, this Fairchild 22 was fitted with a low wing. The results of these tests were reported by J.W. Wetmore in NACA TN No. 714 which was "a flight investigation ...to determine the lateral-control characteristics of retractable ailerons installed on a highly tapered wing." Wetmore concluded that: "There retractable ailerons tested in this investigation gave approximately the same degree of control as the plain ailerons of equal span with which the airplane was previously equipped. The amount of control available with the retractable ailerons was not sufficient to be considered satisfactory owing, apparently, to their rather short span (0.327 of the wing span). With the aileron span increased to between 0.50 and 0.60 of the wing span, a satisfactory degree of control would probably be obtained.
