A family kayaks safely on Dexter Reservoir near Lowell, Oregon, May 5, 2021. All family members wore life jackets to help ensure a safe time on the water. Water safety is an important component of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' public outreach efforts. Portland District, USACE averages more than four million visitors per year at 133 recreation sites across 18 dams and reservoirs in Oregon and Washington. The visitation numbers plus water recreation activities can be a deadly mix unless users take precautions. Recreational boating-related incidents spiked in 2020, with 27 Oregonians dying – three happened at Portland District reservoirs.
