This Fort Riley Friday we are back on the Historic Cavalry Post.
After the Cavalry Commander's quarters was built at the head of Forsyth Avenue in 1888 (see Quarters 1, June 18th, 2021 Fort Riley Friday), three residences for field officers next-in-command were constructed: quarters 2, 19 and 26.
Quarters 19 on Sheridan Avenue was built southwest of the commander's house in 1890. It was constructed with limestone walls and foundation, wood and concrete floors and a tin roof.
While designated as Cavalry Post Officer Quarters when constructed, quarters 19 later served as home to the Post Veterinarian---a very important position on the cavalry post.
