Viewed through a military humvee mirror, Pfc. Brandon J. Flores of the California Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 18th Cavalry Squadron, 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, pulls security at a traffic intersection Sept. 8, 2021 at Lake Tahoe Basin, California, during the Caldor Fire. Flores and more than 200 infantrymen were activated to assist local and state law enforcement in an evacuated area due to California’s second-largest wildfire of the year. The Caldor Fire ignited Aug. 14 and has torched nearly 220,000 acres in just over two weeks. The fire spread near Lake Tahoe, on the California-Nevada border, forcing more than 25,000 residents and visitors to leave the area. Cal Guardsmen were monitoring intersections, allowing civilian law enforcement to exercise their authorities elsewhere. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt. Eddie Siguenza)
