Expecting the unexpected is a practice Soldiers from the 1st Batallion, 506th Infantry Regiment have to prepare for while in-processing Afghan evacuees inside Fort Pickett. Their usual task is briefing the evacuees as they arrive in buses and assisting during in-processing, but on August 30th, a medical emergency required quick action.
As a load of buses were arriving, SFC Gregory Fugitt was notified that an Afghan evacuee on board was expecting to give birth any day. Seconds later he boarded the bus to discover the woman was already having contractions. Fugitt assisted others in getting the woman to an ambulance that was on standby so she could be taken to a local hospital. Fugitt and his soldiers showed their capabilities that day, and will continue to work efficiently during the duration of the mission.
The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible. This initiative provides Afghan personnel essential support at secure locations outside Afghanistan."
