Tech. Sgt. Wilfredo Martinez, a crew chief assigned to the 459th Air Refueling Wing, Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, removes the fuel hose from a U.S. Air Force Reserve KC-135 Stratotanker at Rovaniemi Air Base, Finland, during Arctic Challenge Exercise 2021, June 15. The Finnish refuel the aircraft prior to each day’s refueling mission. ACE 21 is a joint, multinational exercise is conducted every other year and gives invited nations an opportunity to participate in Cross Border Training, conducted in northern parts of the Nordic countries. CBT events are cost-efficient exercises where the respective nations’ fighter jets operating from their home bases meet in the air to practice a variety of scenarios in a unique airspace. Events such as Arctic Challenge Exercise 21 provide vital opportunities, not only for multiple U.S. services to work together, but also for integrated, total force training with Reserve and National Guard units and our partner nations’ militaries to ensure interoperability.
