Welcome to Fort Riley Friday as we take a trip back in time to explore Fort Riley's historic structures.
This week we look at Quarters 1 on Barry Avenue, also known as the Commanding General's house. Completed in 1888, Quarters 1 was designated as the Cavalry Post Commanding General's residence. During this time in Fort Riley's history, Main Post was home to separate cavalry and artillery posts. Quarters 1 Barry Avenue was built with limestone walls and foundation, wood and concrete floors and a slate roof. It features Queen Anne style architecture with Richardsonian Romanesque detailing. A third-floor balcony gave the commander a clear view of his troops drilling on the parade field down Forsyth Avenue. Today, 1 Barry Avenue continues to serve as the private residence of Fort Riley's current commanding general.
