Dryden, New York native returns to Yokosuka, Japan for a 4th 7th Fleet deployment

Dryden, New York native Cmdr. Joseph Parsons recently reported to Commander, Submarine Group 7 (CSG7) for a fourth stint in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility. A Naval Flight Officer and 2002 Naval Academy Graduate, Parsons has flown missions in 7th Fleet with the “Fighting Marlins” of Patrol Squadron Forty (VP-40) over the course of two deployments in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. In 2016, he served as Flag Secretary on the staff of U.S. 7th Fleet for 2 years, returning to VP-40 in 2018 as its Executive Officer. In June 2020, he became the squadron's Commanding Officer, where he served until reporting to CSG7, the undersea warfare task force for U.S. 7th Fleet, this month. "I joined [the Navy] because the idea of service appealed to me," explained the Dryden High School graduate. "My conception of service at that time though, as a high school senior in 1998, was a bit nebulous; it has become more well-defined with every tour, every deployment, every challenge and every milestone, and it is why I’m still in the Navy."
