“Exercise Balikatan is important especially for us and our forces, because it’s not all the time that we have the opportunity to do bilateral exercises for readiness or whatever situation may arise. In our service, most of the time, people are doing actual missions. Training doesn’t happen as often. So this is the only chance that we get to control a lot of air from both sides.
We have adopted the TTPs, the tactics, techniques and procedures, of close air support from our U.S. counterparts. This enhances our interoperability because everyone is working on the same page, everyone is working with the same doctrine. By practicing these during Exercise Balikatan, we increase our proficiency in all of the tactics that we have adopted since 2007, when we first had our JTAC, joint terminal attack controller, capabilities in the AFP, Armed Forces of the Philippines. Most of the branches of the AFP are sending their own operators to train with us, because they are also trying to adopt the same TTPs that the Philippine Air Force adopted from our counterparts. Everyone in the AFP organization are becoming more interested in having JTACs in their services.”
