An open house was help at the Command Museum aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Aug. 28 for a mural painted by Cpl. Jesse Alwin, reproduction specialist, Service Company, Headquarters and Service Company. California Campaign: La Ultima Resistancia (The Last Stand) depicts a battle scene during the Mexican-American War. The museum was looking to add a piece to focus on the war and provided Alwin with all the historical information on the Marines and local Californians of that period and took up to six weeks to complete. Joanie Schwarz-Wetter, education specialist at the Command Museum, explained the mural is beneficial to the exhibit dedicated to the time period because certain grades study the Mexican-American War and will help students understand California's role during the war. The piece can be viewed at the museum during hours of operation. Alwin explains that the piece has been up for about a week and it's been getting positive reactions. "It was a great experience," said Alwin. "All the museum personnel have been very helpful."
