Pfc. James Anderson Jr. was the first African American Marine to earn the Medal of Honor. He was awarder the medal posthumously for his heroic actions during the Vietnam War. During Operation Prairie II, while advancing through the jungle, Anderson Jr.'s platoon was ambushed my North Vietnamese forces. During this ambush, Anderson Jr. dove onto a grenade thrown by the enemy, absorbing the blast with his body and saving the lives of his fellow Marines. This graphic was created in honor of African American History Month and the service of African American Marines everywhere. (U.S. Marine Corps graphic created by Lance Cpl. Kindo Go)
