This Fort Riley Friday we continue our look at facilities constructed around garrison headquarters, building 500. This area of post is historically known as the Hospital/Post Headquarters District.
509 Holbrook Avenue was built in 1910 as the Isolation Hospital. It was constructed with limestone walls and foundation, wood and concrete floors and a slate roof.
By 1917, building 509 had become an annex of the adjacent post hospital, building 500, and in 1930 was repurposed into the hospital barracks with a capacity of 44 occupants.
More recently, building 509 has housed the Security and Intelligence Division of the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security, or DPTMS. Today, it is home to the 1st Infantry Division’s Danger Voice Signal University which delivers information technology and signal related training that allows Soldiers to become more proficient in executing their mission, whether deployed or in garrison. The Building and Grounds branch of the Directorate of Public Works, or DPW, is also located in building 509.
