Maj. Charles An, a U.S. Army Reserve staff officer with the Joint Staff at the Pentagon, receives the first shot of the two-dose vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 at the Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling Chapel in Washington, D.C., Jan. 7, 2021. SARS-CoV-2 is the coronavirus that causes the COVD-19 infection, the virus behind the 2020 pandemic. The COVID-19 vaccine consists of two doses administered about 21-28 days apart. he two available COVID-19 vaccines, manufactured by Pfizer and Moderna, require two doses. This is necessary to ensure it is maximally effective. For instance, the Pfizer vaccine is 52% effective after one dose and 95% effective after the second dose. It is very important that you receive the vaccine from the same manufacturer for both doses and at the specified time. (U.S. Army Reserve photo courtesy of Major Charles An/released)
