SAN DIEGO (Nov 9, 2020) Marine Corps 1st Sgt. Chad Barton (left) and Lt. Col. Rocky Checca (center), Marines assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), present Capt. Bradford Smith, NMCSD’s commanding officer (right), with a cake to celebrate the Marine Corps’ 245th birthday Nov. 9. On November 10, 1775, the Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that “two Battalions of Marines be raised,” thus establishing the Continental Marines and marking the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. Serving on land and at sea, the first Marines distinguished themselves in a number of important operations, including their first amphibious raid into the Bahamas in March 1776. NMCSD's mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
