201026-N-N0043-1008 NEWPORT, R.I. (Oct. 26, 2020) Vice Adm. John Nowell, Jr., chief of naval personnel, right, and Rear Adm. Pete Garvin, commander, Naval Education and Training Command, left, receive an overview of the Conning Officer Virtual Environment (COVE) simulator by Capt. Christopher Alexander, commanding officer, Surface Warfare Schools Command. The COVE detects both process (observation of visual cues) and performance (correct orders at the correct time), measuring the student’s proficiency and identifies performance problems. The program can also give students advice before a particular shiphandling problem becomes unmanageable, but not before the student has a chance to see the adverse effects of an error.
