PORTSMOUTH, Va. (Oct. 19, 2020) – Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) is collecting COVID Convalescent Plasma (CCP) in an effort to help patients who are sick with COVID-19 fight the virus. Robert (Bob) F. McDonnell, former Governor of Virginia visited NMCP to donate plasma, Oct. 19. “The military service has been a part of my family for 70 years,” McDonnell said. “I learned that the medical center has its own plasma program and there it became an opportunity to give.” Convalescent plasma is the liquid part of blood that is collected from patients who have recovered from an infection. The antibodies present in convalescent plasma are proteins that may help a person fight the coronavirus. “This opportunity is great and it is our duty; to help and give back to the young men and women who are doing so much to protect us,” McDonnell said. “Anything I can do to give back to those heroes, I’m going to do.” (U.S. Navy photo by Seaman Imani Daniels/Released)
