FORT BENNING, Ga. – In a February 2020 photo here, members of the EXFOR, or Experimentation Force, move into an area they've just scouted with use of a small drone. The drone was one of various items of newly developed military gear the EXFOR tried out during a mock combat exercise to assess how well it functions. When a company wants to sell the Army new gear, the Army wants to know what Soldiers think of the item. For that it looks to the EXFOR, whose job is to assess the items in field conditions and give candid feedback on how they functioned during the experiment. EXFOR's Soldiers are assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 29th Infantry Regiment, 199th Infantry Brigade, part of the U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence. Though stationed at Fort Benning, the EXFOR serves the entire Army.
