Like many other military flags, the Air Force flag symbolizes a prestigious history of honorable service and dedication to this country. Designed by Dorothy G. Gatchell and Arthur E. Dubois, the flag’s design has remained unchanged since its introduction in 1951, when President Harry S. Truman officially declared it the Air Force Flag. The Ultramarine Blue flag consists of the Air Force coat of arms in the middle surrounded by 13 white stars that represent the 13 original colonies. The 3 stars at the top represent the Army, Navy and Air Force. The crest includes the American Bald Eagle, the symbol of the United States and air striking power. The eagle’s head is turned to the right and symbolizes facing the enemy and looking toward the future. The cloud formation depicts the creation of a new firmament and the entire shield is taken from the heraldic representation of the thunderbolt of Jupiter, the Roman mythological god of the heavens.
